The ICAERUS project leverages drones and artificial intelligence to monitor natural environments, supporting smarter land management practices. The project’s applications include:

Wildfire prevention: by utilizing hyperspectral cameras and advanced data models, the technology analyses forest vegetation to identify areas with high fire risk, such as those with high fuel loads or low moisture content.

Forest health: the system can pinpoint individual trees that are under environmental stress or damaged, allowing for targeted inspections and interventions.

Wildlife monitoring: drones equipped with infrared sensors track animal movements in a non-invasive manner. This helps monitor migration patterns, study behaviour, and detect potential disease risks early by identifying unusual activity, such as a potentially infected animal approaching a herd.

Ultimately, the project focuses on innovation and capacity building for agricultural, environmental, and rural UAV services to better protect ecosystems.
